Things to keep in mind
Significant Exclusions
We will not pay any benefits for an accident that is directly or indirectly the result of:
| - | deliberatley (except in an attempt to save a human life); or |
| - | when your judgement or actions are impaired while you are under the influence of alcohol, or any drug neither prescribed nor taken as prescribed by a doctor. |
We will not pay you benefits if you have lived outside the United Kingdom, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man for more than 12 weeks in total in the 12 months before the accident.
Limitations
The most we will pay in total for all claims under this policy is limited to an amount equal to the death benefit.
If, prior to your accident, you already had a sickness, disease, naturally occurring condition or injury that has contributed to your bodily injury then we will ask a doctor to assess the impact and we will reduce your benefit accordingly.
For a full list of exclusions and limitations see the Terms and Conditions.
The total cost of your cover
If you would like to work out the total cost of your cover, first calculate the amount you will pay over a year – simply by multiplying your monthly premium by 12. For example: a monthly premium of £9.99 x 12 payments = £119.88. You can then multiply this annual figure by the amount of years you pay for the cover. For example, if you hold the cover for 10 years you will pay £1198.80.
Club Together wanted to find out more about the Avon Insurance Accidental Death and Fracture Cover, before we were prepared to introduce the cover to our members. So as part of our usual Research, Review and Recommend policy, we asked Club Together panel member Tony Rose from the telent pension scheme to visit Andy Manson, Sales & Marketing Development Manager at Avon Insurance to find out more.
Tony: So what is the Avon Accidental Death and Fracture Cover?
Andy: Well, I would say that it is a variation of an existing product we’ve been running successfully for a number of years. It pays out in the event of death as the result of an accident and pays out a cash benefit for specified bone fractures. The nature of the injury will determine the amount of benefit that is payable. It’s a variation because we’ve adapted an existing product in order to meet the needs of Club Together members.
Tony: How long has the product been available?
Andy: The original product has been available since 2001. This variation is new for Club Together members.
Tony: Do premiums go up as you get older?
Andy: No. There is a fixed premium for the entirety of the policy. So you can take it out at 50 and pay £9.99 per month and you’d still be paying £9.99 per month for the policy throughout the duration (all premiums include Insurance Premium Tax applicable at the current rate).
Tony: Is the £9.99 a month premium for an individual or for his family?
Andy: It’s for an individual. Your partner can take out a policy and, if eligible, they will be covered under their own name for an additional £9.99 per month. We’re happy to extend the offer to eligible friends and relatives of Club Together members.
Tony: There’s a cash payout for an injury?
Andy: I would say it is important to note here that this policy covers you for specified fractures, as opposed to being injured and suffering bruising, for example. When it comes to medical terminology we have to be very careful in terms of what we say is and isn’t covered. A dislocation isn’t covered for example, because it’s not a break in the continuity of bone requiring treatment in a hospital.
But yes, we have different levels of cash payouts that you would be entitled to, depending on what you have fractured. We have a table of benefits in our policy booklet that will clearly show the amount that you would be awarded and any exclusions that may apply. This will be available to all Club Together members who receive our information pack.
Tony: Does this include hospital benefit?
Andy: This particular product doesn’t: to include hospital benefit would have increased the monthly premium at which we could offer this product.
Tony: Are you only offering one level of cover?
Andy: Yes, we wanted to offer Club Together pension members a simple, straightforward policy offering, so we have agreed to offer just a single product, for a single, fixed monthly premium. This ensures that all readers know exactly what they are getting for their money.
Tony: What are the criteria to take out this cover?
Andy: There aren’t many criteria! To be eligible you have to be aged 50 - 79 and be a UK resident.
Tony: What questions does the application process have about one’s history?
Andy: It’ll ask you for your name, your date of birth, your address and your preferred payment method... but rest assured, we don’t need to know who your registered Doctor is nor will you need a medical examination upon application.
Tony: Do you ever contact your customer’s GP about anything?
Andy: The terms and conditions of the policy are such that when a claim is made we will provide you with a claim form and when you or your next of kin fill it in you/they are signing a declaration which then gives us permission to contact your GP. Only at the stage of claiming would we do that.
Tony: What sort of questions would you ask the GP?
Andy: We would initially ask them to confirm the nature of the fracture and if there were any pre-existing medical conditions that have caused/contributed to the injury received. And only if this is appropriate to the claim will it be approved and go through the process. Ordinarily nothing happens with the GP until that point.
Tony: Can you tell me more about the ‘living benefits’ as they’re being called? Could you talk a bit more about what they cover?
Andy: Yes, absolutely - the ‘living benefits’ in the policy include a comprehensive range of fractures resulting from an accident, from ankle or wrist to skull or neck injuries. Brain damage or serious disability associated with a fractured skull or neck are also covered.
Tony: Can we write in to cancel the policy? Is there any notification we would need to give?
Andy: Yes you can. You can write in or telephone to cancel your policy and it will end when the next premium is due. You can cancel at any point during the policy but if you cancel within the first 14 days you get back any premiums you may have paid.
Tony: What about complaints?
Andy: We have a dedicated complaints team here who will investigate any complaint thoroughly.
Tony: Part of my brief here is to make sure we get value for money. Barclays for example, offers a lower premium of £7.19 a month for very similar fatal accident cover. Can you comment on that for our members?
Andy: Unfortunately I cannot comment on other companies’ products. What I can tell you about Avon Insurance is that we undertake customer research and regular benchmarking of our products to make sure we are responding to a customer’s needs in the products that we offer. We place a lot of emphasis on ensuring we treat customers fairly by investigating each claim on its own merits and pride ourselves on having a UK based call centre.
Tony: Can you please just clarify what you are offering exclusively to Club Together members?
Andy: We’ve adapted an existing policy in order to meet the needs of Club Together members. What we’re offering exclusively for Club Together members is a package whereby they receive an extended eligibility age range when taking out the cover, cover for a longer period, up until age 90 the choice of one of two welcome gifts, £20 Marks and Spencer voucher or £20 cashback (after the payment of the third month’s premium) and also the opportunity to extend this exclusive package offer to friends and family.
Tony’s opinion
Honesty
There is no ‘small’ print’ whereby they can avoid meeting their responsibility to pay a genuine claim.
Price
Avon will insure up to 90 years old. So, if you are under age 80 and want insurance against accidental death and fracture, without the need to declare pre-existing medical conditions (but any relevant pre-existing condition could reduce the benefit), then Avon offer good value for money. Benefits are paid in addition to claims from other insurance policies.
Service
Avon has their own call centre and they demonstrated extremely fast response to a call.
Recognition
The Accidental Death and Fracture Cover is new and is being offered to Club Together members as an exclusive package, so an early acceptance of the offer could be beneficial.
Information
There is a lack of policy information on their web site as it has not been designed as a customer website, however the policy is fully explained in requested brochures.
